The Studio app
Studio is the app for drawing storyboards with a pen or a finger, on tablets, phones and computers (in testing; coming to iPad and iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac). It works on your untitled.movie projects: what you draw is saved to the project, and what your team does shows up while you look.
Signing in and finding your way
- Sign in with your untitled.movie account. Studio opens your device's browser for it and comes back by itself.
- Projects lists the projects you belong to. A project has three tabs: Storyboards, Writing and Look.
- Projects, storyboards and members are set up on the website. Studio needs a connection to load and to save.
- The app speaks the language of your device: English, German, Spanish or French.
- The ? in the bar at the top opens this page. The version of the app is at the bottom of the project list; name it when you write to us.
Storyboards and shots
- A storyboard shows its scenes with their shots. Tap a shot to open it; Add shot puts a new one into a scene.
- Opening a shot takes it for you, so nobody else changes it at the same time. Others see that you are editing it. A shot someone left open can be taken over with Take over; managers can always do that.
- The board follows what others do: new shots and versions appear without reloading.
- Managers can delete a whole storyboard: the menu (⋮) at the top of the board, then Delete storyboard. It goes for good, with its shots and every drawing.
Drawing
- Pen and fingers: the pen (or the mouse) draws. Once a pen has touched the screen, fingers no longer draw, so your hand can rest on it; two fingers move, zoom and turn the canvas. Draw with finger lets a finger draw after all; on a phone it is switched on from the start. A quick tap with two fingers undoes, with three fingers redoes.
- Brushes: Light pencil, Pencil, Pen, Brush, Tone and Note pen follow the pressure and tilt of the pen; each has its Size and Opacity. Pick a colour takes a colour from the drawing. Straight lines draws with a ruler, and a line that starts where the last one ended continues it.
- Layers: every brush draws on its own layer, so construction, line, tone and notes stay apart: the light pencil on Reference, the pencil on Pencil, the pen on Ink, the brush on Fill, tone on Tone and the note pen on Notes. The Eraser and Clear layer work on the layer you drew on last.
- Lasso: draw around a part of the layer, then move, scale, rotate or mirror it, fill it with the brush colour or erase it. Transform the layer does the same with the whole layer; Flip mirrors the whole panel.
- Seeing more: Onion skin shows the neighbouring panels faintly behind yours. Guides lays a grid, the centre, thirds or safe areas over the canvas.
- Panels: a shot has one or more panels. Add panel and Delete panel are next to the panels.
- Details: the title, shot size, dialogue and notes of the shot.
- On a phone: held upright, the panels and the tools are under the canvas; turned on its side, they stand left and right of it. Held upright, Reference images, Script, Details, History and Help are in the menu (⋮) at the top.
- With a keyboard: Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes and Shift+Cmd+Z or Ctrl+Y redoes; 1 to 6 choose a brush, E the eraser, L the lasso; Enter sets a selection down, Esc puts it back, Delete erases it.
Saving, versions and working together
- While you draw, Studio keeps your work as a draft every few seconds; the bar shows Saving… and Saved.
- Done checks the shot in: your work becomes a new version and the shot is free for others. If you leave with the arrow instead, Studio asks before it discards what you drew since the last version.
- History lists the versions of the shot. Restore makes an older one the newest; nothing is lost. Managers can delete an older version for good with the bin next to it (Delete version; on a phone, in the version's menu ⋮).
- If someone takes the shot over while you draw, your work is not lost: it is kept as a version of its own.
The script and reference images
- Script shows the scene of the screenplay the shot belongs to, next to the canvas (on a phone, over it), with the shot's lines marked. Studio says when the script has changed since the scene was linked.
- Reference images puts a picture into the panel's Reference layer to draw over: an image from the project's bible, or one From this device.
Look
The Look tab holds the project's visual references: stills, looks, generated variants and clips. New reference starts one, Add images takes pictures from your device. Open an image to Approve or Reject it and to see where it comes from. Managers can delete a whole reference with its images: the menu (⋮) at the top of the reference, then Delete reference.
Writing
The Writing tab lists the project's documents by track and opens them in the same editor as the website, inside the app: writing together, comments, the outline, history and exports. An export is downloaded and offered to share or save. More about writing.
Your account
- The person icon on the project list opens your account: your language on the website and in emails, every support access, and deleting the account. Sign out is next to it.
- On Android, Studio fills the whole screen; swipe in from the edge to see the system bars.
- What the app sends to us is described in the privacy policy.
